Agricultural Films Market Overview

Agricultural Films Market is projected to be worth USD 16.10 billion by 2030, registering a CAGR of 5.93% during the forecast period (2021 - 2030).

Plasticulture uses polymeric film as agricultural films. These films offer early harvesting, shorter growing times, and greater yields.

Agricultural films are in high demand as a result of the growing population and the subsequent increase in food demand. The properties of plastics include durability, lightness, transmittance, and reflectance of ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and middle infrared rays, as well as effectiveness at preventing moisture accumulation and fogging. As a result of rapid urbanization and industrialization, Asia-Pacific developing nations have been experiencing a shortage of arable land during the forecast period, which will increase demand for agricultural films. Asia-Pacific's agricultural industries are also a major driver for market growth.

End-users face significant disposal challenges when it comes to agricultural films, but recycling can mitigate those challenges. In addition, various government regulations, including the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), may impede the growth of the plastics market. Polymers used in agriculture are the result of research and development, providing manufacturers with a lucrative opportunity to grow over the forecast period.

COVID-19 Analysis

Several governments imposed travel restrictions and nationwide closures during the initial phase of the pandemic to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus. In mid-2020, agricultural film sales in Asia-Pacific suffered from travel and trade restrictions, as well as a labor shortage in the agriculture sector. Due to easing restrictions and the fact that agriculture is an essential service, conditions have improved in many parts of the world. In addition, greenhouse vegetable demand has increased substantially in some countries, which has led to a rise in agricultural films. Thus, COVID-19 is expected to have a moderate impact on the agricultural films market in 2021.

Competitive Landscape

Agricultural films are consolidated globally due to a small number of major players and a large number of smaller and regional players. From the standpoint of revenue in 2020, Berry Global IncBASF SE, Ab Rani Plast Oy, and Plastika Kritis S.A are the leading companies in the market. There has been a great deal of research and development for the development of biodegradable and long-lasting products by industry participants. To ensure sustainable product innovations, key companies are partnering with biotechnology firms.

Regional Analysis

Five geographic regions were considered for this analysis: Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, and Africa.

Agricultural films are dominated by the Asia-Pacific region. Asia-Pacific markets for agricultural films are driven by a growing emphasis on export-oriented cultivation of fruits and vegetables and large areas under greenhouses. Nearly half of the total greenhouse space is devoted to vegetable cultivation in the region. Approximately 224,974 acres of greenhouse agriculture land were cultivated in Asia-Pacific in 2017, according to the International Greenhouse Vegetable Production statistics 2017.

Protected agriculture is becoming increasingly popular among farmers in the Asia-Pacific region, including in China. The area of protected cropland in China is estimated to be more than 3.3 million hectares at present. Many countries in the region use agricultural films to cover greenhouses and mulch, especially for vegetable cultivation, such as India, Japan, and South Korea. Due to the growing cultivation of fruits and vegetables in greenhouses in Asia-Pacific in the coming years, agricultural films are expected to grow further.

Due to increased demand for agricultural films in crops such as corn, wheat, and soybean, North American markets accounted for the second-largest share in 2017.

As 90% of the agricultural produce in the region is consumed domestically, the market for agricultural films in Europe is expected to grow at a rapid pace.

Argentina, Brazil, and Chile, among other countries, produce wheat and corn, which will drive the Latin American market to grow.

As a result of the relatively slow growth of the agricultural sector in the Middle East & Africa, the market for agricultural products is expected to grow slowly.

Recent Developments

October 2021- Geminor, a resource management firm, has entered the production of a new kind of stretch film made up of 100% recycled plastic feedstock. The majority of the feedstock is manufactured from agricultural waste plastics. Every year, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of stretch film is utilized for the baling of animal feed in the European region. Usually, the LLDPE type of film is used. Geminor stated that they have handled plastic waste from agriculture for a very long time and always wished for an eco-friendlier solution for the disposal of plastic volumes. Collaborating with numerous partners, the company has finally discovered a new process that guarantees total and efficient reuse of the stretch film.

October 2021-ExxonMobil has announced the launch of the two latest polyethylene (PE) grades, Exceed XP 7052 and Exceed XP 7021. These offer end users and film converters and benefits for applications varying from primary packaging to greenhouse agriculture. Both of these latest products offer a blend of fractional melt index (MI) and low density (0.911- 0.912 g/cm³) that allows the production of films with improved bubble stability and substantially boosts output for converters.
