UV radiation comes from the sun and has three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. UVA rays go deep into the skin, causing aging and damaging DNA. They can lead to long-term issues like wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. UVB rays are stronger and directly damage DNA, causing sunburn and skin tanning. UVC rays are mostly blocked by the ozone layer and don't reach the Earth's surface.
Too much exposure to UV radiation can harm the eyes, causing inflammation and cataracts. It can also weaken the immune system, making it harder to fight infections and reducing the effectiveness of vaccines. This is especially concerning for vulnerable groups like children. In many sunny countries, people are becoming more aware of the harmful effects of UV rays on the skin.
Sun protection products act like a shield for the skin. They create a layer that reflects UV rays, preventing them from penetrating the skin. Some products use physical or inorganic filters, while others use organic filters that absorb UV radiation and release it as infrared. To address the increasing cases of skin cancer, awareness programs and lifestyle changes are being promoted. For example, the SunSmart program in Australia advises people to wear protective clothing, use sunscreen with high SPF, wear hats, seek shade, and wear sunglasses. Similar campaigns, like Sun Awareness in the UK, educate people about the risks of sunburn, excessive tanning, and the dangers of sunbeds.
Governments are also taking steps. In 2017, seven US states passed laws for sunscreen use in schools. In 2014, L’Oréal S.A. partnered with the Melanoma Research Alliance for the "It’s THAT Worth It to Me" campaign. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of sun damage and promote the use of sun protection products through social media. These efforts contribute to educating people about the risks of UV radiation and encouraging the use of sun protection for a healthier lifestyle.
