Demand of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grows in Aviation Industry
By Shubhendra Anand , 17 February, 2025
The airline industry faces climate change challenges in 2024 due to fuel-related issues in the oil and gas industry. Sustainable aviation fuel emerges as an essential component in the aviation industry. In order to ensure sustainability, integration of such clean fuel in the aviation industry is necessary. This is due to the high carbon footprints emitted from airlines with conventional fuel. A survey in 2024 shows that globally, airlines forecast that 99 billion gallons of fuel will be spent throughout the year. It indicates a high level of fuel expenditure compared to the previous year. Thus, it increases the demand for sustainable fuel in the aviation sector.
The 2024 survey shows results for previous years' fuel consumption in the aviation sector. The aviation sector's fuel consumption in 2023 was 93 billion gallons. In 2019, the aviation sector’s fuel consumption was 96 billion gallons. The three years mentioned above show the highest fuel consumption in the aviation sector. However, 2020, 2021, and 2022 reported a fuel expenditure of 52, 62, and 77 billion gallons, respectively. The data indicates a significant change in the rate of fuel expenditure by the aviation industry over the years till 2023. Moreover, experts claim that fuel expenditure in the aviation industry in 2024 can reach 100 billion gallons.
Sustainable aviation fuel plays a significant role in fuel consumption due to the demand for fuel from airlines. Therefore, sustainable aviation fuel will grow exponentially worldwide in 2024. Further, it is driven by regulatory mandates, decarbonization, and corporate commitments. Corporate commitments and regulatory mandates state-specific rules and regulations to safeguard sustainability. Decarbonization is the most crucial factor as it reduces the carbon footprints. Switching to sustainable aviation fuel is necessary as air transport demands have increased.
