Mobile substation market is expected to grow at ~5% CAGR during the forecast period.
A mobile substation is a container equipped with necessary high and medium voltage components of a full substation, including power transformer, switchgear and disconnect switches, metering transformers, surge arresters, protection and control equipment, AC and DC auxiliary power and control systems. Other equipment can be supplied to meet customer specific requirements. A mobile substation is intended to be pulled by a truck tractor, due to which it is mounted on a specially designed semi-trailer chassis.
Substations play a crucial role in the transmission and distribution of electrical power throughout the grid. Disruption can be caused by a range of events outside of the control of utilities, grid operators and industries, including equipment breakdown, natural events such as lightning strikes, floods, and earthquakes. It can also be caused by operational requirements such as maintenance and refurbishment. Mobile substations can bridge the gap left by these events, helping in keeping the grid operational and safe.
The purpose of modernly developed mobile substation is mainly to guarantee quick restoration of power supply after a major fault in a substation. However, if required, they can also be used for temporary power supply during maintenance or substation extensions. They can be used in temperatures between 40ºC and -50ºC. However transports shall not be done at lower temperatures than -35ºC because of risk for damages of tyres.
Global mobile substation market has been segmented based on voltage type, mobile transformer, power rating, application and region. Based on voltage type the market is segmented as HV and MV. Among these, the MV, is projected to dominate the market through 2023. The purpose of mobile substations is mainly to feed MV system, which can be done with standard MV distribution panels to optimize space, with SF6 insulated panels. Based on the mobile transformer the market is segmented as power transformer, and distribution transformer. Distribution transformer dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to be the fastest-growing segment of mobile substation.
Distribution transformers are used for lower voltage distribution networks as a means to end-user connectivity. (11kV, 6.6 kV, 3.3 kV, 440V, 230V) and are generally rated less than 200 MVA. The phenomenal growth in urbanization and industrialization across the world is expected to boost the growth of distribution transformer market during the forecast period. Based on the power rating, the market is segmented as Up to 10MVA, 11 MVA-25 MVA, 25 MVA-100 MVA and Above 100 MVA. 25 MVA-100 MVA dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to be the fastest-growing power rating over the next five years. The suitability of 25 MVA-100 MVA mobile substation is favorable for all end-use application. Based on the applications, the market is segmented into Energy & Utilities, Infrastructure, Industrial, and Others. Energy & Utilities sector dominated the market in 2016 and is projected to be the fastest-growing application over the next five years.
The utility industry is one of the booming application areas pertaining to mobile substations, owing to the high demand-supply gap in energy in most of the developing and developed nations. The growth can be attributed to the increase in demand for renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, and hydro to meet the consumers’ demand for power generation. Mobile substations have a large scope in the utility industry as these systems are used in transmitting and distributing power.
The mobile substation market is expected to have a huge number of advancements over the forecast period, owing to continuous developments in power industry. Also the growing technological advancement preferences for high end features in transmission and distribution system, helps the industry, advance. The market is also expected to have high expansion activities by multinationals and well-established companies.
