Global Risks Over Climate Change: 2023

By Anshula Mandaokar , 23 March, 2023

Climate change has always been a headache to the world. The Climate Change Performance Index 2023 compares 59 countries and the EU in the renewable energies, Greenhouse Gas emissions, energy use, and climate policy. It provides an overview of the current happenings and efforts related to climate change.

Reports say the experts consider inflation the most vital over the next two years, but rising prices won't create much threat. Instead, the world would face severe risks related to climate change.

According to the data, the world's focus has shifted to crises today: inflation, food and energy supplies, social and political polarization, tepid growth, and geopolitical confrontation. Managing director of the World Economic Forum, Saadia Zahidi, says, "much-needed attention is being diverted from new risks to natural ecosystems, human health, digital rights, security, and economic stability that could become catastrophes in the next decade."

As the reports reveal, extreme climate events can lead to food, water, and energy supply crises, which eventually reflect political upheaval, mass migration, and social unrest.

According to World Food Programme, at the beginning of 2023, many European countries observed the warmest January day on record. WFP reports also say the record-breaking changes have also meant increased hunger. Nearly around 350 million people face acute food shortages worldwide.
