By Aarti Dhapte , 19 July, 2023
The Apple company shared a new report supporting the App Store's impact a week before Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). The study conducted by the Analysis Group shows that the App Store ecosystem facilitated USD 1.1 trillion in developer sales and billings in 2022; a small fraction of all these was subjected to Apple's controversial commission. Apple had already paid more than USD 320 billion by January 2023.
Major key drivers contributing to the growth in the App Store Ecosystem are- advancement in app advertisements, mainly retail apps, and social media, and the ride-hailing sectors making a solid rebounding.
Apple's CEO said in a press release that the app store is a vibrant and innovative marketplace that lays down a lot of opportunities; also, the company is ready to invest in the developer's success and the future of the app's economy. The company also admitted that the App Store attracted more than 650 million weekly visitors in 2022, and by the end of 2022, the app had made more than USD 320 billion since the inception of the App Store in 2008. As the figure is up from USD 260 billion in January 2022, it implies developers have made USD 60 billion in 2022 alone. This acceleration was helped by the introduction of the App Store Small Business Program launched in 2021 and has reduced Apple's commission from 30 to 15 percent for developers making USD 1 million per year. The company also witnessed a 64 percent increase in iOS- app based retail sales since 2020. Also, the data given by the company show Food and grocery sales were one of the fastest-growing app categories. The App Store has as many as 123 apps to choose from in 2022, as it turns 15 since it was launched in 2008.
Apple gathered between USD 10 and USD 25 billion in the App Store commissions in 2022, with an average commission rate of 15 to 25 percent.
