Cabot Corporation has purchased the Chiba solar farm from Shoko Co., Ltd. The solar farm, which is next to Cabot's carbon black production facility in Chiba, Japan, will allow Cabot to export solar energy as a renewable energy source to the local electrical grid.
Up to 3,500 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity are produced by the Chiba solar farm annually, which is sufficient to power more than 700 houses in Japan. The purchase helps the business achieve its sustainability goals because the solar farm represents an investment in clean energy.
One of Cabot's 2025 worldwide sustainability targets is to export twice as much energy as it imports, although many businesses are working hard just to reduce the quantity of electricity they buy. Cabot uses energy from its production operations to reduce its own emissions, as well as the net emissions of adjacent businesses and communities, in order to help the world transition to a future with fewer carbon emissions. With the introduction of three new circular grades—one for high jetness and two for tinting applications—global specialty chemicals manufacturer Orion Engineered Carbons will highlight its achievements in sustainability at the Eastern Coatings Show in 2023.
The move to a circular economy is supported by Orion's first circular gas black for coatings systems, XPB 10045, which is based on pyrolysis oil. It enables formulators to produce more environmentally friendly coatings with application characteristics similar to those of standard speciality carbon blacks while being broadly compatible with all applicable coating processes.
