In-addition it also used as a solvent in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride cements and coatings, in precision magnetic tape, and as a reaction solvent in the production of pharmaceuticals.     

One third of butanediol consumed worldwide goes into the manufacture of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) resins. The automotive and electrical/electronic components industries are the leading consumers of PBT resins.  

The production of Gammabutyrolactone (GBL) accounts for 21% of butanediol production. Gammabutyrolactone (GBL) consumption is for the manufacture of NMP, which is used as a solvent in electronics, paint strippers, engineering resins, and others. GBL is also used in the manufacture of 2-pyrrolidone, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and polyvinylpyrrolidone.
