Recently, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released two proposed rules to end the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavoured cigars. The main reason behind ending the sales of flavoured cigars and menthol cigarettes is that it will help reduce tobacco product usage in youth, save lives, and reduce tobacco-related health diseases. Here, two of the five cigarettes sold in the country in 2020 are menthols.

Upon the release of new rules, products are to be removed within one year. According to the surveys, selling menthol cigarettes and flavoured cigars will promote health quality and help save lives.

A ballot initiative in the 2022 midterms was passed in California to ban flavoured tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes and flavoured cigars. According to the data, more than 63 percent of Californians agreed that the products must be outlawed. Whereas menthol cigarettes are marketed as "cool," "refreshing," and "smooth," they are also linked to making smoking have a negative impact on communities of color.

Again, the reports reveal that the number of cigarettes sold in the U.S. has declined, but the sale of menthol has increased by up to 37 percent over the last decade. Survey says menthol cigarettes are popular among the young mass, the LGBT community, and African Americans mostly. According to the data, 85 percent of Black US smokers buy menthol cigarettes compared to 30 percent of white smokers. It has also been found that the soothing effect of menthol cigarettes allows more toxins to be inhaled by smokers. The American Lung Association has also supported from long for the removal of menthol cigarettes from the marketplace.
