Agricultural Industry Strives for more Sustainability, and Biostimulants will Emerge as the Product of Choice

By Anshula Mandaokar , 17 January, 2023

Infertility of soil is one of the most significant difficulties facing the area of agriculture all over the world. Biostimulants are products that help in overcoming the supply chain volatility that has been introduced into agriculture as a result of extreme climate variations and, more recently, the war between Russia and Ukraine. Evonik Industries revealed in one of its most recent actions that it is developing a biostimulant that will enable agriculturists and farmers to cut their fertilizer consumption in half while keeping 93% of the yield. After seeing an increase of 17% in 2021, fertilizer costs are anticipated to go up a further 12% by the end of 2022 in the United States alone.

According to projections made by the National Corn Growers Association, the average amount its members spent on synthetic fertilizers in 2022 will be approximately 80 percentage points higher than what they paid in 2018. Russia is responsible for approximately 16% of the world's total urea exports and nearly 12% of the total global exports of MAP and DAP. Extracts from seaweed have the potential to boost the production of crops and improve their growth performance.

Biostimulants are substances that cause an increase in tissue concentrations, an improvement in the mineral composition of plant tissues, and an enhancement of the movement of micronutrients from the roots to the shoots. It is anticipated that the Indian subcontinent will be one of the places that generate the most significant revenue from the sale of seaweed extract biostimulants.

The African region's impoverished population and degraded agricultural land are expected to be the primary drivers behind the emergence of new business opportunities in this region of the world's market. The widespread use of biostimulants seems far off, yet it's thrilling. To avoid uncertainty and assure clarity, the biostimulants sector must settle on one definition before the shift. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics are used in agriculture, and the biostimulants business may be able to use them to advance. Based on past data and understanding, artificial intelligence may be able to detect new raw materials or microbiological strains.
