Citric acid is a tricarboxylic acid with molecular formula C6H8O7 and has CAS (Chemical Abstracts Services) number 77-92-9. Citric acid chemical structure consists of three carboxyl functional groups (-COOH) with attached hydroxy-propane. Citric acid is a natural acidulant found in fruits, microbes, animal tissues and plants. Commercially, it is produced by microbial fermentation of carbohydrate substrate and is available in anhydrous as well as monohydrate forms.
Major applications of citric acid are in food & beverages, pharmaceuticals, detergents and others. Among all these applications, food & beverage is estimated to be a most prominent application accounting for more than two third of the overall consumption. It is used as a flavor enhancer, preservative and acidulant in the food & beverage industry. Moreover, the chelating ability and nontoxic properties of citric acid stimulates its use in industries such as textile, pulp & paper and construction industry. Furthermore, it is also used in the pharmaceutical industry for soluble aspirin preparation. The global citric acid market is estimated to witness single digit moderate growth rate in the near future.
Citric Acid: Market Dynamics
The global citric acid market is estimated to be driven by factors such as the growing food & beverage industry, increasing consumption in the pharmaceutical industry, and growing demand in various industries as a cleaning and chelating agent. Citric acid is preferred over other food additives owing to its organic nature. The growing consumption in the food & beverage industry is anticipated to be gain traction owing to increasing food safety regulations by governments across the globe. For instance, U.S. food & drug administration restricts the use of certain synthetic food preservatives owing to their toxic properties which consequently results in increasing demand of citric acid as a suitable alternative. Being a suitable alternative for such synthetic alternative, the global demand of citric acid as food additive is projected to spur over the forecast period. Additionally, increasing consumption of soft drinks will drive the demand as a sweetener in the global market.
Moreover, its growing use in detergents owing to the increasing restrictions on phosphates due to their ill effect on environment is projected to be the major driving factor for this market. Phosphates which are used in detergents have recently been categorized as an environmental toxic substance. In 2013, The Council of European Union had set a limit of 0.5 grams of phosphorus to be used in every washing cycle of consumer laundry detergents. Consequently, the demand for citric acid in detergents application is estimated to increase. Use of phosphates in detergents is estimated to be partially replaced by citric acid which will further drive the growth of this market. Consequently, all these will result in the steady growth of the same in the future.
However, excess consumption of citric acid causes vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps and others health problem consequently which results in a lower demand of citric acid. The same can cause lower demand due to growing health issues. Citrus drinks contain artificial sweeteners that enhance flavor also leads to obesity. Awareness among consumer regarding low calorie beverages that do not contain artificial sweeteners is restraining the growth of this market.
