A renowned manufacturer of chemicals worldwide, SABIC has launched two new resins, SABIC PP compound H1090 and STAMAX 30YH611, that it claims are ideal for sheet extrusion and thermoforming. These materials provide a special substitute for conventional sheet metal forming, such as compression and injection moulding, and enable users to create large, intricate structural components.

These novel goods are built on polypropylene (PP) and contain 30% glass fibre reinforcement. They are intumescent and flame retardant (FR) materials that can be utilised for top covers, enclosures, and module separators on electric vehicle (EV) battery packs.

According to SABIC, both grades provide exceptional thermal barrier qualities that can aid in containing or delaying the spread of thermal runaway. In addition, these materials' extrusion and thermoforming processes provide advantages in weight compared to stamped sheet metal, design, system cost, and inherent thermal and electrical insulation.

Toray Industries of Japan has created a quick integrated moulding process for mobility components made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). This technique sandwiches a thermosetting prepreg skin with exceptional mechanical qualities on top of a lightweight, porous carbon-fiber-reinforced foam (CFRF) core.

With this revolutionary process, CFRP mobility components, such automobile roofs, may be moulded ten times more quickly than with a traditional autoclave moulding setup.

Typically, thermosetting prepreg skins are sandwiched between urethane foam cores in CFRP components. Large panels for cars, ships, aeroplanes, and infrastructure are common uses for these lightweight, stiff structures. In order to best attach the core after moulding it to the skin, some have advocated for shorter production durations.
