With the introduction of premium assessments for nickel sulphate in Europe, Fastmarkets, the leading cross-commodity price reporting agency (PRA), makes a major contribution to increased transparency in the battery cathode market. In nickel-rich cathode lithium-ion batteries, specifically those with a nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) chemistry, nickel sulphate is an essential component. A big step towards encouraging more openness in the market for battery raw materials is the price launch.

The decision by Fastmarkets to introduce these prices coincides with a forecast by their research team that EV battery demand will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16% between 2023 and 2033. Demand in Europe is expected to rise by 12% to 790 GWh by that time.

The suite of nickel sulphate prices that Fastmarkets currently offers, which includes assessments for ex-works China, cif Japan, and South Korea, will be enhanced by the addition of these new assessments for Europe. The disparity in pricing also reflects the varying priorities of consumers around the world, as some markets seek to localise their supply chains.
