Monolithic Power Systems (US) has bought Axign in the Netherlands to enhance its power management capabilities with digital signal processing.

Axign develops programmable multicore DSP for audio processors with near-zero distortion signals, which, when paired with MPS power designs, minimize power usage for automotive and consumer audio systems.

Traditional Class-D audio amplifiers must exchange power consumption for audio quality to achieve minimal distortion over the audio frequency range. Utilizing ultra-fast data conversion and a completely digital control loop to get loudspeaker feedback instead of the power stage's output filter.

This design guarantees that the loudspeaker accurately reproduces the audio source and controls Class-D pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals so precisely that the power stage or output filter consumes little power.

Axign's Zero Common Mode modulation decreases idle ripple current in output filters, reducing power consumption and thermal concerns. Heatsinks, fans, and other metal bulks are removed to reduce product cost as well as space.

Two new Qualcomm sound platforms have emerged this month, promising high-quality audio and low-latency listening. Qualcomm's third-generation S3 and S5 audio chips will soon be incorporated into a variety of audio products to add cutting-edge technologies. Both chipsets enhance processors but serve distinct markets.

The Qualcomm S3 Gen 3 sound platform, the cheaper of the two CPUs, targets mid-tier handsets with price in mind. The Qualcomm S5 Gen 3 audio processor is for high-end smartphones that can afford better components.

Qualcomm S3 Gen 3 features a quad-core processing architecture with an 80MHz CPU and twin 240MHz DSP to provide immersive music. The chip supports LE Audio with Bluetooth 5.4 and Qualcomm's Adaptive ANC. Snapdragon Sound, a new Qualcomm sound technology, offers lossless music at up to 48KHz without straining the device. On-chip audio buffering memory should speed up data access, lowering smartphone-to-audio device transfer delay.
