Market Highlights

The global Electrical Component for Desalination Plant market is accounted for to register a CAGR of 7.36% during the forecast period and is estimated to reach USD 24,559.1 million by 2032.

Mining operations in countries such as US, Russia, Canada, China, Australia, and Chile have significantly contributed to the increasing demand for desalination equipment. These nations are confronted with water scarcity challenges and the depletion of groundwater reserves. According to the International Trade Administration, Chile plays a prominent role in global copper and lithium production, accounting for approximately one-third and one-quarter of the world's supply, respectively. The country boasts the largest copper and lithium reserves globally, with 200 million metric tons and 9.2 million metric tons, respectively. These valuable metals, essential for driving the green economy, are mainly concentrated in the arid regions of Antofagasta, Atacama, and Tarapacá in northern Chile.

The Atacama region, known for its extreme aridity and characterized by sandy landscapes, rocky terrain, and salt lakes, poses significant water supply challenges for mining activities. To address this issue, Bechtel, a renowned engineering, construction, and project management company, has played a pivotal role in constructing three major desalination plants in Chile. These plants account for over 60 percent of the country's new desalination capacity. One notable example is the Escondida Water Supply (EWS) Project, which ensures a sustainable water supply by desalinating water sourced from the Pacific Ocean. This water is then transported to the mine site located at an elevation of 3,200 meters in the Andes mountain range. The EWS desalination plant, boasting a massive capacity of 216,000 million cubic meters per day (equivalent to 3,330 liters per second), stands as the largest and highest volume facility in the Americas. These remarkable desalination efforts have enabled the mining industry in Chile to overcome the water scarcity challenges in the region and sustain their operations effectively.

Segment Analysis

The global Electrical Component for Desalination Plant market has been segmented based on Type, End User and Region.

The global Electrical Component for Desalination Plant Market segmentation, based on Type has been segmented as Transformers, Switchgears, Motors, Drives and Others. Among these, the Transformers segment is anticipated to dominate the global Electrical Component for Desalination Plant market revenue through the projected period as estimated by MRFR analysts. Transformers contributes in enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the desalination plants by reducing the power loss during distribution and transmission of the power. With the desalination plants undergoing upgrades and expansion, the need for transformers is increasing for providing flexibility and scalability for adopting the evolving power requirements.

In the End User segment, the market is categorized as Industrial, Residential and Others. Industrial is further segmented into Mining, Marine and Others. Out of which Industrial segment held the maximum share in the base year market and is also expected to be holding a significant share in the forecasted period as well.  Various types of industries such as mining, manufacturing and food processing requires significant quantities of water for various types of processes and thus the need for desalination plants is increasing for fulfilling their requirement of fresh water. This factor is creating higher needs for electrical components used in desalination plants.

Regional Analysis

By Region, the Electrical Component for Desalination Plant market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa, and South America. The Middle East & Africa Electrical Component for Desalination Plant market holds a considerable market share and is also forecasted to hold the largest share during the forecast period. As technologies for the beneficial reuse of brine continue to evolve, the commercial-scale extraction of high-value minerals, such as magnesium, lithium, and pure sodium chloride, from brine can generate revenues that offset the costs associated with desalinated water production. This transformative approach has the potential to convert desalination from being the highest-cost source of fresh water supply to the lowest-cost sustainable option.
