Škoda Auto continues to keep moving forward to achieve carbon neutrality. The company's subsidiary ŠKO-ENERGO, which provides heating for the town of Mladá Boleslav and comprehensive energy services to the automaker, is starting a significant project to modernize the plant and convert it to 100% biomass. In 2024, work on the project will start. Energy production will become completely carbon neutral by switching to wood chips and phyto-pellets. One of the biggest projects of its kind in the Czech Republic, the renovated heating plant is expected to cost €141 million and be operational in three years. As part of its Next Level Škoda Strategy 2030, it will support Škoda's aggressive environmental goals throughout the whole value chain.
The first half of 2024 is when the project is expected to launch. Within three years, the power plant will undergo a complete renovation. All boilers will only use biomass, which will be made up of 30% phytopellets and 70% wood chips. In line with Czech and European law, the biomass will be certified, highlighting the sustainability of the whole supply chain. After the transition is finished, an estimated 290,000 tonnes of CO2 will be saved annually.
The power plant currently runs on a mix of coal and biomass; in 2005, KO-ENERGO began using biomass. Ever since the percentage of fuel that is environmentally friendly has been rising. Approximately 35% of the energy used at Å koda Auto's Czech production plants by 2022 came from renewable sources. This will make a significant contribution to the challenging environmental goals outlined in its Next Level Koda Strategy 2030.
