North America: Expanding consumer for low-emission
North America has propelled the introduction of sustainable materials into the Americas as well, through commercial adoption, ESGs, and increased demand by the consumer for low-emission, healthier interior environments. Circular economy principles are beginning to emerge through structural movement towards recycled/reclaimed materials, including reclaimed wood and recycled metals, as well as upcycled products and the use of bio-based innovations. Biophilic design principles are also being embraced with the integration of natural, tactile, warm surfaces and the use of antimicrobial treatments, circadian lighting, and low-VOCs to promote well-being. Modular, and assembly-friendly, fit-outs are being implemented that allow flexibility and adaptability in both commercial and residential settings.
Europe: Strong Production commercial interiors
The European market for eco-friendly materials and products for commercial interiors is currently leading the world, largely thanks to the EU Green Deal and Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulations that require countries in Europe to use materials that are more circular in nature (have a longer life), produce fewer hazardous material, and are easier to repair than traditional materials. The implementation of these new regulations is directed toward having countries switch to using eco-friendly materials as a driver of business growth through circular economy principles, using materials from both recycled and natural sources to reduce CO2 emissions and create greater resource efficiency.
China: Growing sustainable materials
China's commitment to carbon peaking in 2030, carbon neutrality by 2060, and developing a circular economy, the country is rapidly becoming one of the world's largest players in sustainable materials for interior fit out. Driven by the 14th Five-Year Plan and the Beautiful China 2020 initiative (a Chinese national strategy), China is creating and implementing policy that fosters the creation and use of green building materials certified under green building material schemes, low carbon construction, and efficient use of resources.
Asian: Protection of sustainable materials
Asian markets outside of China are experiencing substantial growth in sustainable materials for interior design projects due to stronger green building codes; corporate ESG goals; and higher instances of the focus on occupant wellness. Key trends in the marketplace include the adoption of low-VOC finishes, bio composite-based products (including rapidly renewable bamboo and cork-based flooring), recycled metal products, and natural-fiber-based textile materials that focus on lifecycle durability; reduced embodied carbon reduction; and improved indoor air quality.
Middle East & Africa: Emerging strategic sustainable materials
The Middle East has developed, and continues to develop, as a structurally important region of the sustainable materials sector for interior fit-outs, mostly due to a convergence of policy directives with a significant amount of giga-projects in different phases of construction due to the growing demand/decreased availability of natural resources. Saudi Arabia's progression into the future of sustainable materials for interior fit-outs is being supported by Vision 2030's focus on digital innovation & technology, as well as sustainable urbanization, as part of the overall SMART-City Infrastructure vision.
Australia: Evolving Sustainable Materials
Australia has become a frontrunner and continues to develop as an evolving player in the world of Sustainable Materials for Interior Fit-Out applications. Increased demands placed upon manufacturers by regulatory authorities have led to greater levels of Corporate Social Responsibility by firms across all nations, creating closer alignment with the aspirations of National Circular Economy strategies. Major industry trends include the greater use of Low VOC Paints, adhesives and finishes, the use of reclaimed/recycled timbers such as Spotted Gum and blackbutt; and the emulation of Biophilic Design which utilises natural, locally sourced materials to support the health and well-being of occupants and minimise Embodied Carbon.
Latin America: Emphasis sustainable materials
Latin America has become an important player in relation to sustainable materials for the interior fit-out industry due to the unique regional emphasis being placed on the use of ecological materials and growing amounts of green certification activity throughout the region. According to a survey of all regions around the world done in 2025, Latin America was the only region in which ecological materials were established as the number one priority for sustainable construction projects, which is structurally influencing how specifications are made when developing commercial and retail interior fit-outs.
Africa: Emerging sustainable materials
Increasing adherence to green standards, combined with continued barriers to accessing sustainable materials for fitting out buildings across Africa, create both a challenging and promising context for the sustainable building materials market throughout the continent. By 2025, 35% of construction stakeholders view "climate resilience" as their highest priority for sustainability in Africa; therefore, there will be a significant demand for "thermal adaptable" (i.e., energy-efficient) interior fit-out systems sourced locally and designed for the climate. The Green Building Council of South Africa has become Africa's best-established institutional anchor for green interior fit-out systems. Since its founding in 2007, the Green Building Council of South Africa has influenced more than 1,000 buildings and recognised more than 2,700 individuals as "Green Star" professionals
