Impact of COVID-19 on the Global Throat Lozenges Market
Global Throat Lozenges Market is expected to witness a positive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sore throat and cough are the common symptoms of COVID-19. Therefore, people under home isolation have been using at-home treatments for COVID-19 such as throat lozenges for persistent cough and over-the-counter pain reliever for body aches. Hence, the rising demand for throat lozenges for the treatment of initial COVID-19 symptoms of coughing and sore throat is likely to drive the growth of the market of throat lozenges in the next 2 to 3 years.
Antibiotics are the most recommended treatment for the majority of infections including viral infections. Despite the rising rate of antibiotic resistance, patients have often prescribed antibiotics for the treatment of respiratory infections. Throat lozenges are an effective alternative of antibiotic treatments of respiratory infection, the common components used is amylmetacresol, dichlorobenzyl alcohol, and hexylresorcinol. Hence, there is a need for awareness among patients for non-antibiotic therapy alternatives.
Throat lozenges including amylmetacresol and dichlorobenzyl have a direct viricidal effect on respiratory viruses, such as influenza A, respiratory syncytial virus, and others. These lozenges aid in reducing the congestion of certain infectious viruses in the throat and block the replication of viruses intracellular, due to synthetic inhibitors (amylmetacresol) composition.
The increasing demand for throat lozenges has also resulted in companies from different industries to enter into manufacturing of throat lozenges. For instance, in March 2020, Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls, a UK based sweet manufacturing company, has started manufacturing of flavored throat lozenges (under brand name Uncle Joe's Lozenges and Uncle Joe's Favorites), due to the rising crisis of COVID-19. The company has also started providing online delivery of its products across England.
Throat lozenges are sold in bulk and are low cost compared to other medicinal alternatives for the treatment of sore throat caused due to respiratory infections or a common cold. These are available in different flavors and are Over-the-Counter (OTC) products, making it easily available to thepatients. Also, throat lozenges do not require any prescriptions at the time of purchase, resulting in the fast commercialization of the product. The ease of availability of these products aids in driving the market, due to a rise in at-home treatment of sore throat and cough.
However, there is no proven or approved medication or vaccine developed which can be used in the treatment of COVID-19. Therefore, people can take precautionary measures using throat lozenges to lower the risk of COVID-19 infection.
