Biotechnology Helps in Uniform Recycling of Solid Wastes

By Shubhendra Anand , 29 January, 2024

Waste management is a severe concern in the sustainable development goals set to be achieved by the countries in different timelines. Countries around the globe are focusing on reducing carbon emissions by the end of 2030 to 50 percent. Companies are taking initiatives in sustainable waste management globally in 2023.

Based on a survey conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 57 percent of the waste comes from the top five OECD countries in America that cover landfills. The United States environmental protection agency (EPA) recently announced that it will invest around USD 100 million in infrastructures for recycling purposes and waste management throughout the country in 2023. EPA is focusing on investing around USD 32 million in solid waste management, collecting data, and implementing strategies.

Other surveys suggest that new advanced technologies help transform consumers' behavior to adopt good habits in waste disposal. Experts analyze that waste management in landfills in the United States leads to emissions of unwanted gases harmful to the environment. Since countries around the world are focused on achieving net zero emissions by 2050, reducing emissions of harmful gas emissions into the atmosphere is necessary. Food decomposition leads to methane emissions, an element of greenhouse gas that causes climate change. Simultaneously, more waste than landfills' capacity leads to harmful emissions produced during transportation that involve carbon emissions. Increased waste production leads to other environmental degradation that shifts the focus towards developing sustainable waste disposal ideas in 2023. A LanzaTech, in partnership with Tadweer, conducts a survey showing that 350,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle municipal and commercial solid waste annually can transform 200,000 tonnes of ethanol, producing 120,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuels in a year. The study aims to advance the United States and United Arab Emirates' collaboration to develop a clean energy transition by expanding waste management ideas in 2023.

Solid waste management is difficult as all the waste products cannot be recycled uniformly. Therefore, the studies show that biotechnology comes to rescue with onsite disposal solutions. Experts say biotechnology helps convert waste materials into considerable size that helps better recycle solid waste. Therefore, advancement in technologies can lead to better-recycling ideas in 2023.
